COACHING

How to hire a coach

Just deciding to hire a coach is a big deal.

Let's face it, your insurance, (should you have any), might pay for a few visits to a therapist. However, chances are pretty high if you're working with a coach that investment in yourself is coming right out of your pocket, which means you are probably more committed to the process from the start.

The money is just one aspect of the investment you make when you hire a coach.  The coaching process is going to cost you some time, and it is going to take some energy. If you're working with a masterful coach, it is the investment of energy is probably the most significant spend you're going to make.

Coaching challenges all the things you take for granted. You've got to be present for that during your session and in between sessions. If you can't be available to do the work, don't bother. Don't throw money at coaching if you think it will only take your attention for the hour or so you're working with your coach. You're going to want to have the bandwidth available to give yourself over to the process.

When you are ready to hire a coach:

I always recommend talking to more than one coach before committing to the process. So much of the process is intuitive. There is something primal about the information you can feel about a person when you speak to them that you will never be able to read off a website. Don't assume you've found your soulmate match coach because of a slick and shiny website with awesome web copy they may have paid someone else to write.

You are about to open up your life and your soul. You will want to feel out with the person you want to work with. You will feel even more committed to the decision you make if you explore more than one option available to you.

Some coaches will say it is worth going into debt when you are investing in yourself. I am going to say, maybe, but frankly, probably not. You need to feel good about what you are going to spend. If you don't, the process is going to be handicapped from the start.

Coaching from a place that feels like, "Oh my God. I am borrowing this money from my aunt. This has got to work or I am fucked." isn't going to feel good to anyone. Desperation smells bad.

Don't let some coach guilt-tripping you about not investing in yourself. Truly, money is the least interesting thing you're going to invest in a coaching process. However, whomever you choose should feel like a "HELL YES!". If the money part of a coaching commitment doesn't feel like a "hell, yes." move on.

I have seen clients joyfully spend big dollars on a coach that inspired them when they felt guilty about not having that same money with another coach. You want to feel all in on any commitment you make.

Talk to your new coach about:

  • Billing practices
  • Cancelation policies
  • Length of engagement expectations
  • Confidentiality policies
  • Expectations for time commitments between sessions

Coaching isn't going to change your life.

You are going to do that work.

However, finding the right partner makes doing that work a lot more soulful.
